Refuse (2020)

I never considered this a capitol “F” film but realizing that Stan Brakhage has a ton of films that are less than a minute long, what the hell, this is a film too. Speaking of Brakhage, this film is pretty clearly inspired by him among other filmmakers that I learned about while studying Czech experimental cinema. I felt somewhat envious of filmmakers of the 20th century who had the infrastructure readily available to them to work with 16mm film and experiment with hand painted and imageless films. During covid, I had the bright idea to digitally mimic these filmmakers I adored, so I took old strips of 35mm still photography film that I had destroyed while practicing my developing skills and went at them with bleach, sandpaper, needles, markers, and fire and scanned them to make individual frames that I would export as my own 21st century hand painted film (no 16mm scanner or projector required).
